Suggested visit: 2–4 hrs
Forbidden City 故宫
Walking: Moderate · Transport: Tian’anmen East
What to notice: Ceremonial courtyards, imperial residences and museum galleries. Start with the contrast between the huge outer court and the more intimate inner court.
Is this your kind of place?
Choose it for court history and architecture; expect a long outdoor visit rather than access to every room.
Before going: Reserve the museum admission session with your passport. Selected galleries require extra tickets.

Suggested visit: 1–2 hrs
Temple of Heaven 天坛
Walking: Easy · Transport: Tiantandongmen
What to notice: The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Circular Mound Altar and Echo Wall introduce the emperor’s rituals relating to heaven and harvests. The surrounding park is a different experience from the enclosed monuments.
Is this your kind of place?
Choose it for ceremonial architecture and park surroundings, especially if you want to understand how imperial rule was connected to ritual.
Before going: Check whether your ticket covers the monuments you want, not only entry to the park. Confirm their opening days and times separately.

Suggested visit: 2–3 hrs
Summer Palace 颐和园
Walking: Moderate · Transport: Beigongmen
What to notice: Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill and the painted Long Corridor form a designed landscape. The garden borrowed ideas from southern Chinese gardens, including Hangzhou’s West Lake.
Is this your kind of place?
Choose it for lakeside scenery, garden design and decorated architecture. It offers a different view of court life from the Forbidden City’s formal courtyards.
Before going: This is a large site. A lakeside visit and climbing the hill demand different amounts of effort; select your entrance and accessible paths accordingly.

Suggested visit: 2–3 hrs
Beijing Hutongs 北京胡同
Walking: Easy · Transport: Nanluoguxiang
What to notice: Lanes lined by courtyard houses show another scale of Beijing life. Nanluoguxiang combines a historic street pattern with shops and snacks; it is one particular area, not a name for all Beijing hutongs.
Is this your kind of place?
Choose them for neighborhood history and street-level details. Compare the commercial main lane with the residential side lanes without treating private courtyards as attractions.
Before going: Respect residents’ doors and ask before photographing people. A lane walk does not include entry to private houses.

Suggested visit: 3–5 hrs
Mutianyu Great Wall 慕田峪长城
Walking: Moderate · Transport: Bus / car
What to notice: A mountain section of the Great Wall in Huairou, outside central Beijing. Look at how the wall follows the terrain rather than expecting an urban monument reached by a short subway ride.
Is this your kind of place?
Choose it for the relationship between the wall and mountain landscape. Travel to the site and effort on the wall are separate parts of the visit.
Before going: Confirm transport, admission and any cableway ticket separately. Mountain conditions and steep sections matter; do not infer step-free wall access from the presence of a lift.

Questions visitors usually have
Is Beijing only worth visiting for imperial history?
No. The city also has neighborhood food, contemporary art, parks, design, shopping and a strong everyday café culture.
Which Great Wall section do people compare?
Badaling and Mutianyu offer different access options. Our Mutianyu entry links to official ticket and transport information. Compare the journey, steep steps and lift arrangements before choosing; a lift does not make the wall itself step-free.
How should I choose a restaurant?
Start with the dish and neighborhood, then check recent local reviews, menu photos, ingredient information and whether the restaurant can handle your dietary needs.
